How to convert the Lionel Challenger
edited by Alberto Pedrini
It's easy modify this model, as you see the pick-up shoe can be mounted under the center truck of the loco.
You must use the 7175 pick-up narrowed by cutting the bakelite base.
You must cut some plastic detail from the truck too.
After the removing some of the plastic cover of the wheels you'll see the hole where you insert the pick-up's wire
There are three sockets, one on the tender and two on the loco, all must be modifyed connecting the two old red/black wires to the one black wire.
And only on the central socket, the new red from the pick-up to the red wire on the socket.
Remember you need a multiprotocol central unit such as the Intellibox to control the DCC decoder.
The last problem is mechanical, you must reduce the movement of the third axle of the tender to improve the crossing of the switches
change the central spring with a half piece of PVC pipe as shown here
now the tender runs well
Walther Heavyweight on R2 bend
These coaches can run only on minimum 70 cm radius bends.
Here the modifyes necessary to allow the circulation on R2 tracks.
the arrows show the critical points
Cut the plastic by a Dremel/Proxxon as shown
Now they are ready for the R2 bends
